These young people all share a unique honor: They are Cox Scholars at Indiana University.
The late Jesse Cox believed two things are essential for success: hard work and a good education.
Jesse and his wife Beulah worked together to pay for Jesse’s IU education, so he knew just how difficult it can be to juggle classes with outside responsibilities.
Their effort paid off for Jesse and Beulah. Jesse had a long and successful career—and he wanted to offer the same chance to today’s Indiana University students.
Jesse thought long and hard about how best to support students while integrating the other half of the equation, hard work.
His solution was to fund a scholarship program that provides up to 75 percent of the total cost of attending either IUPUI or IU Bloomington. In return, the students work to pay for the remainder.
That way he felt that they will develop their work ethic and their self-confidence along with their minds.
To date, 63 young men and women have benefited from Jesse’s vision. And through these students, his legacy will live on.
Jesse and Beulah Cox were remarkable people who found great joy in philanthropy. As Jesse told the first class of these talented, industrious students, "I’ve been thinking about you since before you were born."
