Dear Loyal Friend,
In the midst of an economic downturn—indeed, a recession—we have taken the bold step of increasing our campaign goal by 10 percent. Bold indeed, for we are adding this additional $100 million when we have not yet reached our original billion-dollar mark. Why have we made such an extraordinary decision? It’s simple: Because we must.
We must, because our governor and our president have reminded us that, when times are tough, it is not enough to merely stay the course. We must do more.
We must, because the residents of Indiana are counting on this University to help lead them out of the rough. IU must do what it can to revitalize the economy of the state.
We must, because there are building projects on the boards that are crucial to the University’s ability to fulfill its mission in the most effective way possible. State and federal funds are down, so we must look to philanthropy to help complete them.
But most of all we must, because now more than ever, an Indiana University education is the way forward for the students we serve. We must, must make it more affordable for them to take that path and achieve their goals, graduate students and undergraduates alike.
I believe we can do it. The momentum we’ve built up in the Matching the Promise campaign is formidable. Our leadership is strong, energetic, and determined. Our alumni and friends are loyal and willing. With your steadfast help, we will stride forward confidently to meet this new goal.
Indiana is counting on us.
