Wells Scholars are enthusiastic, passionate, and bright. It’s why the program exists: to develop the potential of young people who share the spirit and energy of Dr. Herman B Wells.
Launched in 1990, the program funds 80 to 90 students each year, providing tuition, fees, a living stipend, and enriching experiences, including support for study abroad and for research, a service project, or creative activities.
The return is remarkable. Wells Scholars demonstrate and encourage excellence in the classroom and beyond. As alumni, they contribute to their communities and the world in interesting and innovative ways. And they are showing that Indiana University provides an education that matches the best in the world.
Today, the program faces a funding challenge. Over the past 20 years, its costs have risen to $2 million annually. The original endowment created to honor Dr. Wells cannot sustain the program’s current size and benefits. Yet, Dr. Wells’ vision is precious. The program in his name is critical.
