Release Date: 01/04/2007
Kenneth A. Beckley has been named the 2006 recipient of the William S. Armstrong Ambassador Award, given by the Indiana University Foundation. The award recognizes those within the University community who extend the influence of IU to a broader audience. Beckley has served as president and chief executive officer of the Indiana University Alumni Association since February 2002.
The award is named after William S. Bill Armstrong, who was president of the IU Foundation for 31 years, from 1952 to 1983. Armstrong considerably expanded the university’s development program and was known for his outreach and for connecting alumni and friends to IU.
Beckley received his bachelor’s degree in radio and television from Indiana University in 1962, after which he enjoyed a 14-year career in broadcasting. He returned to the university in 1977 as IUPUI's first director of university relations. He later became executive vice president at H.H. Gregg.
Throughout his career, Beckley remained devoted to Indiana University. He has served as the National Chair of the Indiana University Alumni Association and as a member of the IU Bloomington Athletics Committee. He chaired the Armstrong Student Foundation Endowment Campaign and served on the Indiana University Foundation Board of Associates. In 1998, he received the Indiana University Alumni Association’s highest honor, the President’s Award.
