Chuck Crabb Biography

Assistant Athletic Director, Indiana University

CHUCK CRABB is in his 30th year with Indiana University. After 11 years as sports promotion director, Crabb was named assistant athletic director for facilities management in August 1990. Previous to his tenure as sports promotion director, Crabb served three years as assistant in the IU Varsity Club. He is responsible for overseeing the daily facilities maintenance, scheduling, summer camps and assisting with events planning for Indiana’s 24 intercollegiate varsity sports.

A Brazil, Ind., native, Crabb worked three years in the IU Sports Information office and four years with the Bloomington Herald-Telephone before completing his B.A. degree in journalism and history in 1973. He worked one year as the Terre Haute Tribune wire editor and two years as The Brazil Times managing editor before returning to IU in September 1976.

During the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Crabb served as competition producer for Track & Field in Olympic Stadium coordinating the competition presentation in the stadium and for worldwide media coverage. His Olympic experience started in 1984 at Los Angeles when he was the interview room manager for the Main Press Center. This led to his being named deputy commissioner and media chief for Basketball during the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis.

Perhaps Crabb is best known for his 29 years as public address announcer for Indiana University Athletics. He served as stadium announcer for World Cup '94 men’s soccer matches and World Cup 1999 women’s soccer matches played in Chicago's Soldier Field, 11 U.S. Olympic Festival track & field meets from 1982 through 1995 and numerous Big Ten Conference and NCAA Championships in various sports. He also was the arena announcer in the basketball movie, Blue Chips, starring Nick Nolte and Shaquille O’Neal.
