Ball Brothers Foundation Gift to Support Historic Rehabilitation
Release Date: 5/19/2009
The rehabilitation of historic Ball Gardens on the IUPUI campus has been bolstered by a $100,000 gift from the Ball Brothers Foundation of Muncie.
The gardens are the only remaining Olmstead Brothers-designed therapeutic gardens on a U.S. medical campus. The prominent landscape architects were best known for the design of New York’s Central Park. The Ball Gardens rehabilitation is a $4.55 million project consisting of four areas: Ball Nurses’ Sunken Garden, Convalescent Park, Rotary Building Forecourt, and the newly designed Suite Dreams Project Play Garden at Riley Hospital for Children. Previously, the Ball Brothers Foundation contributed $25,000 to the project.
To date, approximately $1.3 million in commitments have been made toward the rehabilitation and endowment for permanent care of the gardens.
IUPUI Chancellor Charles Bantz announced the gift at a May 15 event that included representatives from the Ball family, Class of 1959 reunion participants from the Schools of Nursing and Medicine, and the Robbins Foundation.
