IUF Subscribes to National Governance, Ethics Principles

< News Archives

The Indiana University Foundation has subscribed to the Principles of Good Governance and Ethical Behavior established by Independent Sector. The Foundation’s Board of Directors adopted the Principles at its regular meeting in February.

Independent Sector is the leadership forum for approximately 600 organizations representing a broad spectrum of nonprofits in the United States. The organization’s work is to lead, strengthen, and mobilize the charitable community to promote a just and inclusive society. One of its core values is “transparency, integrity, and accountability,” including commitment to the “highest possible ethical standards; open and timely sharing of financial, governance, and program information; and responsiveness to society, members, and stakeholders.”

The 33 principles are intended to support board members and staff of nonprofits in promoting the importance of self-regulation and trust in the non-profit sector. More than 300 organizations, such as the American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity International, and United Way of America, are signers.

Gene Tempel, president of the Indiana University Foundation, is a member of the Advisory Committee on Self-Regulation of the Charitable Sector that developed the Principles. Tempel is also one of eight members of the Expert Advisory Group, described by the Nonprofit Panel as “some of America's most knowledgeable scholars and practitioners in crucial aspects of nonprofit operations such as government regulation, financial accountability, and tax policy.”
