Marti Heil is a highly-regarded leader in higher education development. She joined the IU Foundation on October 1, 2009 after serving in a series of increasingly responsible positions in development during her 29 years at Michigan State University.
In her most recent position, associate vice president and chief operating officer for university development at Michigan State, Ms. Heil provided oversight and direction for all fundraising activities, including 30 separate fundraising programs university wide, served as lead liaison to the provost, and directed a staff of 175 with a $10 million operating budget. University giving increased by 142% during her tenure.
Ms. Heil co-directed The Campaign for MSU, a $1.2 billion comprehensive capital campaign effort, more than doubling annual average giving totals. The number of $1 million-plus gifts received was nearly double that received in the previous 49 years.
Ms. Heil began her career with the Capital Area United Way in Lansing, Michigan. At MSU, she accumulated experience in volunteer management; alumni relations; strategic planning; constituent-based fundraising; annual, special, and alumni giving programs; faculty/staff campaigns; telemarketing; and student foundation programs, in addition to campaign planning and fundraising. She was recognized with a university-wide award for her success in developing a collaborative culture and positive work environment at MSU. She is active in the Big Ten development community and served as a highly regarded faculty member for the Big Ten Fundraisers Institute from 2003 through 2008.
