Gary Stratten has more than 20 years' experience in the investment business, including trading, equity research and analysis, and portfolio management. He oversees the management of investments that, as of June 30, 2008, were valued in excess of $1.5 billion for the benefit of IU. Mr. Stratten handles both in-house investments and the numerous outside managers selected and reviewed by the IUF Board of Directors Investment Committee.

Under Mr. Stratten's direction, IU's endowment has become increasingly diversified and less susceptible to market downturns. Over the past 10 years, the portfolio has compounded at 10.2% compared to less than 9% for the average higher education endowment; in a year of good investment returns, growth in the value of the portfolio nearly equals the annual fundraising total. IU consistently ranks among the top 15 public universities in the nation in the market value of its endowment.

After graduating with a degree in finance from the IU Kelley School of Business, Mr. Stratten worked at the Chicago Board Options Exchange before joining Merchants Investment Counseling, now National City Corp., where he was an equity analyst and portfolio manager for both personal and institutional accounts. He later served as co-portfolio manager of a $500 million mutual fund at First America Bank, also now National City Corp. Mr. Stratten joined IUF in 1993 as director of investments, was named CIO in 2002, and received the additional title of vice president in 2005.
