Dr. Eugene R. Tempel, a nationally known expert on philanthropy and the nonprofit sector, joined IUF as its seventh president on September 1, 2008. As president, Dr. Tempel is the chief development officer for IUF. He is responsible for directing development and administrative activities in support of IU’s tradition of excellence in research and education and an endowment that, as of June 30, 2008, was valued in excess of $1.5 billion.

Dr. Tempel has over 25 years of nonprofit leadership, administration, and fundraising experience, including serving as executive director of the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy and its nationally recognized Fund Raising School. He played a key role in the establishment of the Center in 1987 and in transforming it into a leading national resource for education, research, and training in philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. He has since mentored many of the nation’s most successful executives in philanthropic fundraising. In addition to other awards and honors, Dr. Tempel has been named by The Nonprofit Times to its list of the country’s 50 most influential leaders in the nonprofit sector each year since the list was created.

Dr. Tempel is a popular presenter and has authored numerous columns, articles, and other publications in the field. He is the editor of the book Hank Rosso’s Achieving Excellence in Fund Raising, 2nd edition (Jossey Bass, 2003) and co-authored the book Fund Raisers: Their Careers, Stories, Concerns, and Accomplishments (Jossey Bass, 1996) with Margaret A. Duronio. His professional experience includes teaching, training, and consulting internationally.

Dr. Tempel is a professor of philanthropic studies and higher education and an adjunct professor of public administration. He previously served as vice chancellor of external affairs at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis; vice president of the Indiana University Foundation; and director of external affairs for the College of Arts and Sciences at IU.
