This $500 award is named after the late Michael E. Erickson, son of former IUSF director Rita Erickson Barrett. Mike battled leukemia before passing away the summer before he was to attend IU. Mike was going to be a walk-on for the IU varsity baseball team and was a star baseball player at Bloomington High School South, where for a time he held the school record for the most home runs in a single season. He showed courage and determination in the face of numerous obstacles. Despite his circumstances, he still managed to enjoy life and accomplish great things.
The Michael E. Erickson Memorial Scholarship was created to honor a Little 500 rider who has displayed courage, strength, and dedication in the true spirit of the IU Student Foundation. Please nominate someone you believe meets this description and indicate why you think he or she is deserving of the scholarship.
The nominee does not have to be on your team.
Please submit your nomination and essay by March 10.
