BLOOMINGTON, IND. -- Philippa Guthrie will join the Indiana University Foundation (IU Foundation) as the new executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary, effective November 8, 2021. She will be responsible for leading the IU Foundation on all legal matters including tax law, gifts, contracts, real estate, and compliance.
“Philippa’s legal expertise in the nonprofit sector and her experience at the IU Foundation make her the ideal candidate to lead the IU Foundation’s general counsel department,” stated IU Foundation Interim President and CEO J T. Forbes. “I am enthusiastic about her commitment to diversifying external counsel.”
“I had the privilege of working with Philippa on the Board when she previously served in this role,” says Kay Booth, vice chair of the Indiana University Foundation Board of Directors. “Her extensive legal expertise and leadership are wonderful assets to the Foundation.”

Guthrie previously worked as general counsel for the Indiana University Foundation for 16 years before joining the City of Bloomington as corporation counsel. She also worked at Arvin Industries, Inc. (now Meritor, Inc.) in Columbus, Indiana as corporate counsel and assistant secretary as well as Ice Miller Donadio & Ryan (now Ice Miller LLP) in Indianapolis, Indiana as an associate attorney.
Guthrie earned her law degree and a master’s in public administration from Indiana University. She also holds a bachelor’s in history from Dartmouth College. As a Bloomington resident, Guthrie is also active in the local community and currently serves on several not-for-profit boards, including Cardinal Stage and CanopyBloomington.
