IU Foundation Affinity Giving Awards More Than $450,000 in Grants Supporting Projects Advancing IU’s 2030 Strategic Plan

Wednesday, July 10, 2024

Credit/Provider: Liz Kaye/Indiana University

Bloomington, Ind. – Indiana University Foundation (IUF) Affinity Giving is excited to announce the funding of $459,898 to 26 projects across Indiana University (IU) campuses. Grants were awarded in Indianapolis on June 5, 2024. Each affinity giving area, Black Philanthropy Circle (BPC), Queer Philanthropy Circle (QPC), and Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council (WPLC) heard from finalists on how their projects align with IU2030: The Indiana University Strategic Plan.

“This year marked Affinity Giving’s second annual Grants Day, demonstrating a culmination of the commitment the BPC, QPC, and WPLC make to providing meaningful philanthropic support to initiatives and needs across the IU enterprise in alignment with the objectives of IU 2030.” - Rebecca Resetarits, Associate Vice President, Affinity Giving

This year’s award amounts range from $2,500 to $52,277 and support projects that promote student scholarship, arts and culture, students who are studying abroad, campus initiatives for diversity, equity, and inclusion, public health, and student leadership.

IU Foundation’s Black Philanthropy Circle Grants

Since the program's inception in 2018, the Black Philanthropy Circle (BPC) has committed $416,108 in funding to IU projects. The BPC strives to support Black students, staff, and faculty at IU as well as the Black community at large. This year’s grant awards support a range of university initiatives that focus on student leadership programs, career exploration in STEM and healthcare, and culture and art experiences that celebrate the Black community.

“The BPC continues to be an example of the impact philanthropy has on the support of Black students, alumni, faculty, staff, donors, and allies within the Indiana University and IU Foundation communities. This year, we are thrilled to increase our collective impact by providing over $99,958 in grant support and award fully or partially 14 of the 24 grant applications we received. We have visited some of our previous grant recipients to actually "see" how the funds are being utilized and continued to be impressed by the work and dedication they have for supporting Black students, alumni, faculty, staff, and the community at large. We are so excited to see the impact this year’s recipients will make.” - Pamela Miller Hatcher and Kevin Gay, BPC Awards Committee Co-Chairs

IU Foundation’s Queer Philanthropy Circle Grants

Since 2019, the Queer Philanthropy Circle (QPC) has committed $803,714 in grants for projects throughout the university. This year, QPC reviewed applications from across IU campuses on projects that demonstrated how efforts would facilitate comprehensive and practical support for the IU LGBTQ+ community. Proposed projects spanned a spectrum of support, including mental health counseling, support for first year students, cultural competency programs, and support for the fine arts.

“The QPC is honored to support eight worthy initiatives, with one of the eight recipients providing scholarships that are open to students on all IU campuses. The Affinity Giving Grants Day provided our circle with the opportunity to hear from and connect with finalists who strive to provide all individuals in the IU community with a true sense of belonging, inclusion, and equity. The QPC strives to create a space where all people can thrive with safety and respect, and we are thrilled to support programs that continue to make that a reality for so many.” - Sallie Jo Tardy Mitzell, Chair, QPC Advocacy and Community Investments Committee

IU Foundation’s Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council Grants

Since the program's inception in 2012, the Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council (WPLC) has awarded over $1,986,693 across IU. This year’s grant awards support a range of university initiatives that aim to improve public health, provide training and support to student interns, promote STEM disciplines, and provide targeted support to students coming out of the foster care system.

"For thirteen years, we have been inspired and amazed by the positive impact WPLC grant recipients have had on the lives of our fellow Hoosiers. Our members commend their commitment and dedication to IU students across all campuses and to the residents of many Indiana communities. We are grateful to Indiana University for leading the way in supporting affinity giving and enabling us to accomplish far more together than we could individually." - Linda Watson, Chair, WPLC Grants Working Group
